THE POWER OF I AM

“I am is one of the most powerful statements we can make. Whatever follows “I am” starts the creation of it.”

– KRISTEN B U T L E R

Morgan14

Have you stopped lately to listen to what you’re saying about yourself? The words you choose, the actions you take that reinforce these thoughts? I started my year off recognizing this truth by tapping into the word I AM. By doing so, I realized how easily life began to flow to me and for me. Most of all, I loved that I was practicing my knowledge and belief that I was a co-creator with source.

I find it truly empowering that we all have free will or the power of choice. We can choose the direction of our lives, whether that’s positive or negative, rich and abundant or limited by lack. In becoming aware of this, we can change the direction of our life’s course with a simple shift in our words, thoughts and actions.

Morgan03

Morgan05

I know we can all be hard on ourselves and self-critical at times. I think that’s natural and needed. The real test is not being perfect but more so how we choose to use these hardships. Are we going to kindle the fire and continue harping on what we don’t like or are we going use the pain to promote change? Continuation of anything becomes habit, so the quicker you can shift into a place of progress the better off you’ll be.

AWARENESS is the first step to adjusting and creating a healthier life. The thing I realized was my negative self talk or energy was not only permating me as a person but something larger than myself. It was closing me off from positive growth, people and situations that wanted to help me! And as someone passionately focused on growth and improvement, this was a major RED FLAG.

This brings me to the next step DESIRE. You have to actually reach a point where you can no longer accept the way things are. You know kinda like that phrase, ‘it’s always darkest before the dawn,’ or ‘things will get worse before they can get better.’ Sounds really dark but now I get it. You have to want to change and therefore sometimes it takes some dark moments to search for the light.

Morgan01

Through desire comes deliberate ACTION. I wanted to feel better, I wanted to speak more kindness and most of all, I wanted to help others. But by falling back into some mental bad habits (which I’m truly grateful for), I realized I could only help others by reframing and working on my own ish-ues. So I took inventory of what was working for me back in the beginning of the year and I did the work.

I love this quote from Kristen Butler from the Power of Positivity; “Our thoughts and words have crafted our present and are currently crafting our future.” This really puts into perspective how we throw words around but if we saw the immediate manifestion of them we might take time to be a a little more selective, ammmmiright? Like imagine if you’re like “I AM FAT,” and in a blink of an eye you gained 200 lbs. I think you would watch yo mouth a lil more, and also, you would appreciate where you’re at more too.

IMG-9741.jpg

A poisitive reflection I had in my “darkness” was if I had success in the beginning of the year, I can have it again. This self soothing talk really helped me feel optimistic and then helped me stay on track. So I started writing in my I AM Journal again. I carved out a non-negotiable, consistent practice or a morning ritual. This included morning coffee, journaling and reading. I would write out my gratitude, intentions and I AM statements in my I AM Journal. Then I would read whatever I felt compelled to for my daily inspiration.

I want to reiterate, CONSISTENCY is key.  You have to keep at it to build momentum behind this practice and energy. The best part is once you do so long enough, it becomes a habit (and a postive one might I add). You’ll eventaully get to a point where you won’t wanna have your morning coffee without it. If a daily practice is wrong, I don’t wanna be right.

So where are you at today in this journey? I encourage you to take a mental and emotional inventory by sitting quietly and silencing the chatter. Whatever is bothering you, find the contrasting feeling and say or write I AM before it. Know that you’re worthy of it and feel that. As always, feel free to share yours in the comments below!

As many brands are jumping on the athleisure train, there’s one thing I note when determining which will make it into my wardrobe. First a great brand has to have a superb brand image. Secondly, they must remain true to who they are in an ever-changing landscape, evolving with the times. The first is easy if you have good creatives behind you. The second, well that takes some practice and self-awareness.

The ability to keep the brand identity while looking forward is a feat many struggle with. A few that come to mind that successfully balance the two are Nike, Adidas and Victoria’s Secret. One brand that didn’t originally dawn on me was Reebok, which now is in my top five. If I’ve learned anything from this brand, it’s to go beyond your comfort zone.

In the past when I heard Reebok, I instantly imagined an older women wearing comfort sneakers; you know, the granny steeze. Clearly I had discounted the brand who has made major improvements and adjustments since the late 90’s. It wasn’t until I caught wind of their “Be More Human” campaign that I was re-introduced to the brand and their unique messaging. Then came the launch of their new design, the ZOKU RUNNER. Needless to say, I was sold.

| MORE ABOUT THE B R A N D |

The American-inspired global brand is known for their sports and lifestyle products. Built upon a strong heritage and authenticity in sports, fitness and women’s categories, Reebok’s history and values run deep. They are dedicated to providing each and every ‘athlete’ – professional or recreational- with the opportunity, products and inspiration to achieve their full potential. Much like my own personal beliefs, Reebok champions that we’re all worthy of pursuing and achieving greatness.

| NEW ERA, SAME HERITAGE |

Drawing inspiration from the Reebok Classic designs of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, the ZOKU RUNNER nails it by fusing the brand’s rich heritage with advanced design. I have a thing for brands that go beyond the surface. One way to achieve this is through symbolism and deep intentional meaning. The ZOKU RUNNER does just that by paying homage to the Japanese translation of Zoku, which means ‘to be continued’ or ‘to be part of a tribe.’

The ZOKU RUNNER, a descendant of the original Classic, celebrates the continuation through its modernized and updated silhouette. Crafted with ULTRAKNIT material, a superior digital knitting technology, the ZOKU RUNNER has a sock like feel and futuristic fashion appeal. Wearing it through out the whole shoot, the comfort was undeniable, which now I know is due to the seamless knit upper and heathered materials. It’s breathable, lightweight and extremely comfortable. On top of it all, the technology reduces material waste.

Reebok-15

| THE B A C K S T O R Y |

Sometimes we justify discomfort for superficial reasons. After experiencing a back injury that left me inactive for about a month, I now consider many factors when purchasing a shoe. For instance, long-term comfort and support comes first and foremost. Then style and design. If it can provide all the above, even better. I kid you not, the ZOKU RUNNER is one of the most modern in terms of style and technology and the most comfortable shoe I own.

After this injury I also began to take note of other things that could act as a factor for poor back health. I looked straight to my everyday tote. Most of us girls throw any and everything into one big bag, which we lug around all day. Sounds great for your back, I know. This in and of itself could be considered a workout, a safe one? Not so much.

Initially, what I loved most about this pair of shoes was how light they were. I threw them in my bag on my way to the gym and barely noticed I had been carrying them. For most of us “on-the-go” women, we go from one thing to the next. Luckily this shoe works with you not against you, allowing you to move freely without weighing (or slowing) you down.

I AM ________.

I AM….whatever I say I am. 2017 is the year of self-definition…or perhaps un-definition. I realized that as much as words supply meaning they also confine. In the purest form, we must create ourselves, our own opinions and then voice them. Sometimes that’s a matter of standing tall in our truth, letting it be known who we are without uttering a word. However, when we do decide to speak, let us speak kindness and love. Let us be impeccable in all we do. Most of all, let us be impeccable with our word.

Fill in the blank, or don’t. That’s your choice. Sometimes words can’t even begin to describe the totality of our thoughts, feelings or perhaps our existence. If you had to choose a few words to describe yourself today, what would they be? Would they be kind and self-benefiting?

The fun thing about emotional strength is it’s ability to translate to all areas of our life. For example, our hair. In many cultures, hair is symbolic of one’s vitality and ‘spiritual strength.’ What if we looked at hair through this lens? Would the way we brush it or even style it change? Perhaps hair can be greater than a source of creative expression. Perhaps it can indicate how you show up in the world beyond appearances.

When our hair is strong and healthy, it reflects the strength we know we have inside. The Paul Mitchell’s Super Strong® line rebuilds hair from within, improving texture while keeping strands shiny and soft. Beyond that, it shield hair from damaging UV rays and is completely vegan, color-safe and paraben-free!

I took a deep breath in as I observed my surroundings. What a sight Los Angeles has become. Before the rainfall, this city had lost a bit of its luster in my honest opinion. Now I feel as though I’m experiencing one of the most beautiful moments since I first moved to California. I had to stop mid-walk to really absorb this momentary time. This story is about finding inner peace with impermanence.

stylecruse-maverick-bridge-5.jpg

I held my breath as I looked around. I was in awe because I thought I was just transported to Austria. The sky had not a cloud in it. The mountains stood majestic with snow-capped tips, which blended into the clear blue skyline. Just beyond the peaks lay layers of green hillsides that varied in shade.

The iconic landscape from “The Sound of Music,” rolled through my mind and I couldn’t help but smile as my thoughts amused me. I hoped Julie Andrews would pop out of no where, twirling me around aimlessly like in the movie. Much like Andrews chimes in the familiar song, I go to the hills when my heart’s lonely.

stylecruse-maverick-bridge-6.jpg

I spent this past weekend in solitude. Something I do often but always yearn for more of. This time I redecorated my apartment and entertained some of my innermost dreams. The Aquarius New Moon occurred this past weekend, which also marked the Chinese Lunar New Year. Living on the outskirts of Chinatown, I heard firecrackers going off all weekend. This added a kick of energy that ironically foreshadowed the energy of this year’s sign, the Fire Rooster. I felt the desire to take action while the Aquarian vibes got me in touch with my deepest desires.

FLOWING WITH THE NATURAL ENERGY AT WORK:

I. Write out your goals + dreams

II. Release something

III. Feng shui a room

V. Root and ground

VI. Do something communal

I.

Friday night I wrote out 6 goals to achieve in the next 6 months. Some were travel related, career/money focused or beauty inspired. I placed them next to my agate rock, hoping it would magnify their energy and ability to come into fruition. In two days I checked off one of those goals! I’m a bit superstitious but clearly it worked for me.

One of my major dreams is to have my own live/work space. Last week was the ideal time to work with this goal as I had my two bedroom apartment to myself. This really gave me the opportunity to soak it all in; what it would truly feel like to have a place I call my own. To experience it to the fullest I took it a step further; I redecorated to my liking to see what it would look like, making it an active visualization.

I arranged mason jars filled with my seeds and spices above my stove. Placed plants throughout my living room. Dried flowers from my cupboards doors and did yoga in the living room while burning incense. For the entire week, I slept sound and woke refreshed. I found the true definition of freedom is found in the little things.

stylecruse-maverick-bridge-23

  II.

In college I randomly began calling my room the ‘Zen Den.’ It’s stuck ever since. That being said, one of my favorite interests is using artistic decoration as a form of energy healing or redirection. For lack of a better words most would refer to this as feng shui. I’ve always desired to switch up and refresh my room with new arrangement every so often. I’ve noticed it helped with the movement of energy within my space and my physical well-being.

This desire to feng shui tends to happen in line with new chapters of my life, or in this case, new moons. Besides bringing me joy, it has also aided me in the process of letting go. The Tao Te Ching says, “when we know when enough is enough, there will always be enough.” Much like art, this process works on the idea of impermanence; something that is born to be destroyed. Think of fresh flowers. They bring fresh energy to a room but only for so long.

stylecruse-maverick-bridge-14

III.

I tend to grow attached to things. My art, people, things, did I mention my art? Every time I must say goodbye I lament. (Side note: That’s probably where my nostalgia stems from). However I’ve become wiser and realized every goodbye allows for a fresh hello. A constant offering of a blank slate, now that’s my jam.

Next up was a space that felt stale, my bathroom. I added some energy with a sprig of fresh flowers and some bamboo. My second reaction was to throw something away. One thing led to another and eventually I was throwing out a handful of old products that had expired. I saw items that had accumulated dust and that simply irritated me. That was my cue that it was time to go. According to the Tao, by decluttering we simplify. By simplifying, we create greater power and peace by choosing beauty, order and health.

stylecruse-maverick-bridge-19

IV.

After this creative jaunt, I wanted to get outside for some fresh air. It was as though clearing out my material life had made room for more physical health. I felt this spaciousness within, an unbound freeness. I wanted to fill this newfound space with something new. I was reminded of my favorite park I used to frequent every day when I first moved to LA. The trails were calling my name.

I was shocked how much it changed since I last visited. ‘Simply Beautiful’ by Al Green played through my headphones and I felt the emotion of those lyrics as I looked out over the improved landscape I once called my stomping grounds. The pathways were now lined with clover and grass that reached to my mid-calf. I sat down in it and closed my eyes and just breathed. I felt grounded. I felt present. I felt re-aligned. In just an hour, I was re-connected to earth and my purpose.

stylecruse-maverick-bridge-22

V.

On Sunday, I attended a charity event organized by my friend, Brooke. Brooke is a fellow PM Insider and blogger who has dedicated her purpose to giving back. She hosted a beautiful wine tasting and food pairing that creatively raised awareness for some of her favorite charities. Dedicated to pertinent issues such as child hunger and autism, we learned about the love these brands are spreading around the world.

With conscious brands such as This Bar, Cheeky and One Hope, it inspired me to learn about brands and how they’re making a difference but more so, how I could be making a difference with everyday decisions. Oh btw, they’re all DELICIOUS! “To experience peace does not mean that your life is always blissful. It means that you are capable of tapping into a blissful state of mind amidst the normal chaos of a hectic life.”

We all know that sinking feeling when things seemingly don’t go our way. I would imagine it feels quite similar to swimming upstream. Tell it to the girl who got her wisdom teeth pulled, the flu, as well as a flat tire in a week’s time. When it rains it pours (I write this as rain pounds the streets of Los Angeles).

Through these growing pains, a lesson can always be learned. Personally I learned rain is the ultimate cleanser…and we can’t control the flow. Nature will work it’s course, and we must ride the tide. We will arrive changed and in the grace of a peaceful sea, eventually, with some faith. Easier to say once the storm has settled.

morgan-orange-natsin-38

To me, in these trying times, the purpose seems to be the ultimate test of one’s faith, strength and character. We may not be in control of everything, but we are indeed in control of our perspective and reactions. That may seem minuscule but it’s truly liberating knowing that we may channel any negative circumstance into pure gold; or what I simply refer to as “transforming the mess into the message.”

We’ve all played the victim at one time or another. Why me? It’s his fault for cutting me off. I have bad luck and so on and so on. I get it. It’s easier to place the blame elsewhere than to take sole responsibility. But the truth is, we are actually co-creators in everything we experience. You might even say we welcomed in this ‘issue’ as an imperative life lesson we subconsciously know we must learn.

morgan-orange-natsin-30

morgan-orange-natsin-34

I want to show you that you can enjoy your problems. First and foremost, you have to see these so-called problems as opportunities. If we see them as problems, then we got problems. If we can’t make that shift in thought, we can’t enjoy the journey and grow. Because if you think about it, much of life is purely a figment of our imagination. The going may get rough (at times) but it is what we perceive (overall) that shapes our reality. Why not perceive it in a light that makes life as a whole most exciting?

For whatever reason, you’ve undeniably welcomed this situation into your life. Whether it be a difficult relationship that’s teaching you about yourself in relation to others or a series of unfortunate events that’s testing your patience. We all have something to gather from each (problem) opportunity. Simply looking at it as so, is a great place to begin. A simple change in words and perspective can work magic in your life. Best thing, it’s free. If you read this, I hope one thing: You shift from ‘the victim’ to the ‘the opportunist’ by seeing each problem as an opportunity to improve your life.

morgan-orange-natsin-18

morgan-orange-natsin-46

| MAV M A N T R A |

I transform the mess into the message.

morgan-orange-natsin-13

morgan-orange-natsin-43

Another huge adjustment is gratitude. I can’t stress enough how important it is to place your attention and intent in the right places. In the midst of chaos it’s easy to notice what’s going wrong. I do it too. But, what if you were to remember to acknowledge what went right? If you were in an accident, maybe you weren’t injured. Perhaps you lost a valuable item, but now you have space to welcome in something new. Whatever it may be, try to focus on what’s working. This simple shift gives you a new outlook on the situation.

morgan-orange-natsin-10

morgan-orange-natsin-41

These are essentially simple (and effective) ways to learn, grow, and become more compassionate, which is why I think we’re all here, don’t you? These tough lessons come as blessings in disguise so that we may work out our issues together. What better way to improve than by learning from one another and being your own guru.

So welcome and face your challenges with an openness that sets yourself up for success. Approach your opportunities courageously and become stronger. Acknowledge what’s going right and become abundant. Be grateful for each and every life lesson, because they will come and go like the ebb and flow, that is fasho. What will remain is mindfulness and the richness of life. An internal gold that no one can touch.

It’s that time of year for feasting and festivities. As 2016 comes to an end, so do our healthy habits (at least for me). Hey, with cookies that good you’re better off eating them than letting them go to waste (solid justification). That being said, here are a few of my favorite things that are simple, colorful and best of all, comfortable!

If you couldn’t tell by my daily Instagram stories, I’ve been influenced by pastels quite a bit this season. In particular, sherbet tones. It all started after I had a delicious dessert after dinner at the Sunset Tower Hotel in LA. I know, not your average color palette for the red and green or gold and blue holiday. Never the less, still a pretty combo to look at (and eat) if you ask me!

Here are a few of my holiday to do’s:

Take pleasure in the little things

Don’t guilt trip yourself

Take in all the amazing aromas

Bend your diet a little

Add some dazzle

Get in a good view

LIVE A LOT

I’m seeing everything overalls.

I have picked overalls above and over all other options this season. These pocketed jeans inspired by farmers have become a staple in my closet. I had a blast styling them into my fall/winter wardrobe. Style them up or dress them down, these classics can be useful for various occasions, on and off the farm.

To say the least, I’ve basically been living in these Wildfox overalls since purchasing at Crossroads. I snagged these babies for under $50 dollars too! Not bad considering a typical pair could cost you upwards to $200. I can honestly say I’m getting more than my money’s worth considering the quality, condition (second hand purchase) and perfect fit. It was as if they were made for me. Hey, one girl’s pair of old overalls is another’s treasure.

Point being, holding out for the right pair instead of forcing matters can serve you well (and save you money). When it comes to staple items, it’s wise to invest. Shelling out proper dough is welcomed if not encouraged. However, having a little faith and not rushing the process can be just as beneficial. If they’re timeless pieces, they’ll always be around. You’ll find exactly what you need, when you need it.

We’re not all made of money. That being said, one of the best ways to use limitation to your advantage is to get creative and work with what you got. Purchasing a few quality items and rotating them throughout your wardrobe is an amazing way to get your styling and creative juices flowing! So without further adieu, here’s a quick insight into how to style one pair of overalls for two locations.

As another Halloween rolls by, I take time to pause and reflect on this special holiday. To me, every day is an occasion to play and experiment with transformation. What keeps me excited is being able to channel a certain characteristic and infuse that with my personal style. To repurpose is to make the old fresh again, and to me that’s magic.

I was recently reminded by a dear friend of the Oscar Wilde quote, “Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.” This poses an interesting topic during a holiday which encourages us to wear masks. Perhaps masks support, providing a protective barrier so we can drop all inhibitions and allow our true spirits to shine. Or perhaps we hide behind them. Whichever you relate to more, there’s no denying that we’re all a little liberated when we play dress up.

We all live our lives differently by choice. My choice is to encourage others to be comfortable with who they are. Strangely enough I find comfort in taking on different aspects of my life experiences. Every person, place and conversation I come across ultimately become a part of me and my next phase. It’s always fun to see where I’m at come October when the ‘transformation spotlight’s’ on and everyone’s watching.

I learned something about myself from this holiday: I don’t plan. It wasn’t until a few days before Halloween that I came up with my costume (same with last year). I never go out of my way to buy anything, nor do I force a costume. I simply work with what’s presented and currently influencing me. This year I’d been heavily influenced by Paris. It seemed everywhere I turned, all roads led to Paris. Last month I had also become interested in learning more about Old Hollywood and it’s fashion icons.

A week before Halloween I attended a beauty event in Downtown. As I got ready I thought my hair was naturally falling into the classic Bardot bouffant. I went with it as I tied in a black ribbon. Strangely enough I had never seen one of her films nor had I begun to learn much about her. Regardless, I was undoubtedly influenced by her beauty from day one as I’ve been known to rock an occasional bow or two.

At the event they had a fashion illustrator doing beauty portraiture’s. That’s when it all clicked. As I sat down with the artist, Regina, she began to fluidly painted out the shape of my bow. Then she proceeded to the soft volume of my hair. She filled in the waves of my ruffled, off-the-shoulder top, (which I now know is referred to as a Bardot top), added some thick cat-eyed liner and two pillowy pink lips. She looks up at me for the final touches and says, you look very Parisian tonight. In that moment I realized I was channeling Brigitte and the DJ cued up his music from a brief pause. His choice? French music (I kid you not).

And so it was decided…

Ms. Bardot it was.

We all know the situation. Mom reassures you ‘Hunny, it’s not meant to be fashionable, it’s meant to be safe.’ Hailing from Upstate New York, this situation would arise every winter when it came time to break out the good ol’ snow boots. We get a hell of a winter; sounds like a nightmare right? Which part; the ugly protective gear you had to sport regardless of your defiant efforts to refuse or the unbearable winters?

(I’ll let you decide)

Time went on and I resolved the latter issue by moving to Los Angeles…thank gawd. I’ve also since discovered plenty of dope brands that nail it when it comes to functional fashion. One of my favorites thus far being the eyewear brand, Polette, which I reviewed earlier in the year here.

|| SCREEN G E N E R A T I O N ||

Millennials aka the Screen Generation spend an estimated 8 hours per day looking at a screen and check their phones at least 150 times daily. Can you imagine staring at a tree for 8 hours? That feels like an eternity. (Perhaps one day I’ll master the art of stillness and achieve this task, entering ultra-yogi status). To us, 8 hours scrolling and typing away daily is far from difficult for us. It’s all a matter of perspective and I suppose majorly dependent on the action at hand.

So why does this concern us? Well for starters, our circadian rhythm’s are all out of wack. Millennial or not, we’re all surrounded by stimulation, however we have a choice as to how much we engage with it. Some of us partake in high screen time while others choose to limit their exposure. Regardless, it’s important to be well-informed so I want to share with you the harmful effects and how to protect yourself.

imgp2166

I began to notice my inability to fall asleep naturally was becoming more and more difficult. I came to realize the overstimulation created by the blue rays emitted from LED screens (such as my laptop or cell phone) were the culprit. Nothing could truly tear apart a ‘late night Nexflix-er’ more than this new found knowledge. Feeling slightly helpless, Polette came to the rescue and offered up a solution.

Understanding the current landscape and their consumer, Polette opened the floodgates with their new innovative technology to offer protection from these high-energy rays. The result?  E-POLETTE, a line specifically designed to protect your eyes from the harmful effects of high-energy blue lights.

|| S A F E T Y  101 ||

Since day one, our sleep cycles revolved around the sun. When the sun goes down and it becomes dark, we produce melatonin, helping us to fall asleep. When we energize the eyes with artificial light, we disrupt the production and screw up the natural process. Even more damaging, the blue lights from LED-lights have also been connected to damaged retina’s. Stated by Polette, “by frequently using this technology we jeopardize our eyes’ health.”

The E-POLETTE collection is designed to filter out 40% of the blue light. It accomplishes this by using a light-yellow filter. When watching any LED screen, these glasses will ensure your body continues producing melatonin, your day-night rhythm is on point and your retinas are fully protected. For the fashion-forward-techi-conscious, this collection’s a winning choice!
