SHOW ME THE T O N I | Part II

NEW YEAR | NEW YOU

As a new year begins and we all focus on our resolutions, I decide to go an alternative route and create intentions throughout the year. This means everyday I will wake up with purpose. I will be aware of what I am doing but also why I am doing it. However, in order to do so I must be fully present and clear. Resolutions/intentions require a plan/ritual as well as discipline. The plan is the easy part (if it’s simple) but the discipline part, well that you must acquire.

CLEAR SPACE | CLEAR MIND

I’m an extremely visual person, meaning if I see clutter, I feel cluttered. As this affects my energy and ability to work, I now realize the importance of a tidy workspace. For me, the first step is to reduce. Since I complete all my creative work from home, I need my office to feel minimal yet inspiring. I began throwing away old items that no longer served me. Instantly I felt a weight lift from my mind as my apartment began to take on a different air. My room became a sanctuary and my living room became a workspace.

HEAVY vs. LIGHT

Next comes organization. Now that I can move more freely, it is possible to re-organize my life with the remaining necessities. I bought a planner. I got file folders. I started to find my plan, a roadmap. That’s when I found the idea of light vs. heavy lifting; a method where you segment your to-do list based on the amount of energy it requires. Then I found my flow, a rhythm.

OFF THE MIND | ONTO PAPER

The night before I write out tomorrow’s tasks. This organizes my thoughts and prepares me for the day ahead. Secondly, it serves as a stress relief as it clears my mind of worry and therefore helps me sleep. This is what I call off the mind, onto paper. I divide tasks between two columns, heavy vs. light and promise myself to be reasonable and balanced in my expectations. (Need a guide? Try a planner with a pre-made checklist like this one from Anthropologie).

BYE, PROCRASTINATION

I make it a point to focus on the heavy stuff first in order to get it out of the way. What I found in return was this created a reward program if you may. No dessert before dinner ring a bell? The whole concept of having the sweet finish to something substantial has been around since I was two. Trust me, I tried eating my dessert before every meal. Sometimes I still do. However, finishing your work before playing is meant for your benefit and here’s why:

When you promise yourself something after the hard work is completed, you appreciate it more. Ideally when you complete your heavy task first, you can check that off your list and fully enjoy your light task or reward. Of course we want to rebel from discipline but discipline can be great if we re-work our definition and feelings towards it. In truth discipline creates a lifestyle of self-improvement and fulfillment.

 RESULTS

I tried this method out for a week and for me, it worked. I noticed new waves of productivity and clarity. Along the way I learned some valuable lessons too. I found that in having balance in work (or any area of life for that matter), makes all the difference in having an enjoyable process and experience.

LESSONS

-Be reasonable

-Focus on the task at hand

– Take a break if you reach a point of mental/creative exhaustion

– Come back to it later

-Plan the night before

-Use decrement. If the day is very heavy make sure to counter balance it to avoid burnout! (Or lighten your load)

-Use playtime to re-new (meditate, take a nap or a bath, eat a snack, go for a walk, etc.)

– Rest is okay! It can refresh your mind, perspective and creativity (just don’t get lost in the fun zone)

-Don’t feel bad if you don’t complete everything, simply move it over to tomorrow

-Applaud yourself for what you did complete

– Have fun!

__________

Activity is imperative but so is resting. Try to find a healthy balance between the two! I guarantee if you do, 2016 will be prove to be a successful and productive year for you! This is the year of foundation building. I hope you create the blueprints and habits needed in order to flourish in the years to come.

Get digging, start blooming, and show me the monnnnnney!

Dream boards are useful visualization tools for manifesting your dreams into reality. A constant visual reminder of your goals and intentions helps spark a mental motivation. Ever since I could remember I have been an artist with clear vision. I know what I want and I go after it, by all means necessary. So as a visual learner, having that extra boost of motivation only helps propel me that much closer to attaining my goals and ambitions.

I took a more artistic and unique approach in creating my dream board. I looked through magazines for inspiration. Any words or images that jumped out to me, I ripped out. This was my way of using intuition as my means to reach the root of what truly resonates with me. My background in art and composition is apparent in my use of space, psychic lines, and color coordination. This subliminal collage resembles my tendency to speak in riddles, but art is suppose to be subjective anyways. To get a better idea of my rather ambiguous portrait I thought I would break it down for you.

My Main Goal (Cara at the Hearts Center):

Become a Face of Beauty in a iconic sense by staying true to who I am. Sharing Love & Originality. Staying driven and persist will cultivate a tunnel vision that can’t be disrupted. I can therefore break down any walls or barriers I may encounter in the pursuit of reaching my ultimate goal of gracing the cover of VOGUE.

The rest are daily reminders:

– (Smart is Beautiful): there is beauty in Intelligence, be more than a pretty face

– (Nostalgia): Embrace the vintage. It creates feelings/emotions for the viewer

-(Maverick Muse): break the rules

-Use my Passion & Love in everything

-(Flowers): follow your sweetness in life

-(The Magic Touch): psychic capabilities in setting trends vs. following them

-(Changing Your Mind): happiness is a choice, I was taught to always give 110%. The #59  represents my decision to be happy versus sad 59% of the time in the 50/50 option

– (Jesus is my Homeboy): keeping the faith. b.e.l.i.e.v.e.

. . .

This past weekend I reunited with my creative counterpart, Evan Woods, who reminded me of my positivity and optimism. He  said to me in his characteristic sincere & passionate tone,  “Keep up the positivity boo boo. People feel that.” I hope he knows just how much of an impact he’s made on my life and continues to as we progress in this creative pursuit.

In the matter of my first week in LA I managed to allure influential people all around me. I met Britney Spears’ designer, Skrillex’s music manager, Kate Compton followed me on Instagram, met Aaron Ramey, the Co-founder and Creative Director of Babylon Cartel, and last but not least, bumped into Bryant Eslava, continuing the ongoing mystery between me and the photographer. The chances of our paths crossing again in LA hit me in a funny. Guess it just goes to show when you put out positive creative energy you attract it back to you. I think they call that the |law of attraction|.

I’m excited to see where this journey leads next. This is only the beginning.

As Spring semester began to wind down the temperature started to warm up. Purple floral trees adorned the sidewalks of Orange, CA. A distinct honeysuckle fragrance filled the air on campus at Chapman University, as the frenzy of finals week foreshadowed the chaos to come – our annual tradition, Undie Run.

Wednesday

Loud music pounds off the walls to greet the bantering and chatter of pre-Undie Run excitement. Warmth fills the air and turns the heat up a notch in the swarmed house, which is packed wall to wall with enough body heat to melt an Igloo. This easily kept the scantily clad, underwear outfitted students warm while they additionally partook in other such activities that induce a blanket of warmth to defend against the brisk air awaiting them outside. I smiled to myself as I walked through the animal house, as it was in no position to contend to the zoo in my mind. I couldn’t gather a notion to engage in anything but the mental hysteria in my mind; a combination of memorizing my movement backwards, body placement, and not to mention the art of mastering convincing facial expressions with style and ease . The cast and crew remained focused with our eyes on the prize in the midst of the liveliness. We had one shot. We needed Luck.

11:45 pm

Hit and the house filed out and emptied like horses to the brooke. The extreme difference in atmosphere marked the beginning of our excitement and allowed time for a run through of the one continuous shot. We had 15 minutes to fine tune any details or possible mishaps we might encounter (such as a run in with the cops).

12:00 am

A stampede of students rush the streets of Old Towne Orange, cue music.

[We’ve come too far to give up who we are. So let’s raise the bar and our cups to the stars]

After posting the video, we woke to a reality which seemed to be more characteristic of a dream. Just hours after posting the video it went viral and landed us on the front page of Reddit. In the past week, we have reached over 360,000 views and have gained online and media recognition within Southern California. Peep it.
